There are two different types of phone systems used today:

Analog Phone Systems

Analog systems are built on standard copper wire, they are reliable, boast good voice quality and have the basic features you might find in a typical home phone such as hold, mute, redial, and speed dial. They are also be able to transfer calls between extensions. Because of their simplicity and limited potential for expansion, they are relatively inexpensive to purchase but can be expensive to support. For example, changing the location of an extension will require the rewiring of a punchboard by a professional.

VoiP phone systems

VoIP refers to Voice Over Internet Protocol and means that the incoming analog data is converted into digital signals which are sent through an IP network such as wired Ethernet or Wi-Fi instead of traditional phone system circuit transmissions. This does not necessarily mean that the system is dependent on the internet to make calls but rather gives businesses the ability to place calls over the internet and through every local network because it uses the same technology as computer networks.

The digital PBX (Private Branch Exchange) takes over the function of the old-school switchboard and is designed to provide the user with more flexibility for additions, moves and changes that oftentimes can easily be configured via software. Features such as music on hold, VoIP integration, and alarm systems can be supported with modular add-on boards and most digital systems offer unified messaging features such as voicemail delivery to email, fax delivery to email, voicemail transcription to SMS, click to dial and a desktop client.
